Game 22: Dallas vs. Rangers

You figure that the Rangers won’t shoot 5% all season, right? At some point, that has to regress to the mean of around 9-10%, right? Well maybe tonight that will start correcting itself against a Dallas Stars team that has allowed 56 goals over 20 games (2.8 GA/G). Considering how the Rangers played against Boston, you figure a team that doesn’t have Tuukka Rask in net would allow some of those shots to hit twine. Of course, these are all assumptions. Execution is key.

Good ole Lindy Ruff is behind the bench in Dallas now, and he has the Stars playing an overload 1-2-2 forecheck and a 2-1-2 forecheck depending on the score. In the defensive zone, Dallas tends to overload. The Stars also run a 1-3-1 powerplay and diamond/box hybrid penalty kill.

Rangers Lineup:

Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Mats Zuccarello
Rick Nash-Brad Richards-Ryan Callahan
Carl Hagelin-Derick Brassard-Benoit Pouliot
Derek Dorsett-Brian Boyle-Dominic Moore

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi
Marc Staal-Anton Stralman
John Moore-Michael Del Zotto

Henrik Lundqvist gets the start

Scratches: Taylor Pyatt (concussion), J.T. Miller (healthy), Justin Falk (healthy)

Game time is 8:30pm tonight. Don’t forget to check out our Rangers Tickets link for deals to attend games.

Maybe the Ranger players are crappy shooters, it could be that simple.

is 9-10% the league average or what the Rangers have shot in the past few seasons?

With averages, some are above and some are below. Maybe the Rangers are simply below average when it comes to finishing. That stretch of scoring we had could be an outlier when the season is said and done.

We’ll see what happens. I’m optimistic… If guys like Zucc start shooting a little more instead of always looking pass, then maybe our percentages will go up. If the defense knows you’re always looking pass, then they cover the passing lanes. If they know you’re always looking to shoot, then they cover the shooting lanes. Balance is key.

They shot 6% last season, but that’s over 48 games, not 82. That’s all ExtraSkater has at the moment.

lest we forget, this team does know how to score goals

Lehtonen has been having some good starts so hopefully we don’t run into a situation like Rask and Scrivens etc…. keep putting rubber on him and grind down their D.

Finally, a game where the opposing team runs into a hot goalie who steals the win! Wow, what a performance by the King!
