Game 7: Build on a strong performance, beat Jersey

The Rangers are in New Jersey tonight against the Devils hoping to build on the strong performance they showed on Wednesday against the Washington Capitals. The Devils are another team –like the Caps– that is struggling out of the gate. They do not have a win this season, but have three overtime/shootout losses, which keeps them out of the cellar of the “Metropolitan” Division.

The Devils use two separate forechecking systems. In the early going the Devils play a 2-1-2 forecheck, but once the Devils get a lead, they tend to switch forechecking strategies to a 1-2-2 hybrid trap. In the defensive zone, the Devils play an overload/low zone collapse style similar to what the Rangers want to execute. On special teams, the Devils play your standard umbrella powerplayOn the penalty kill, the Devs play a rotation between a box and a diamond, depending on puck location and the setup of the opposition.

Rangers Lineup:

Brad Richards-Derick Brassard-Taylor Pyatt
J.T. Miller-Derek Stepan-Mats Zuccarello
Benoit Pouliot-Brian Boyle-Derek Dorsett
Darroll Powe-Dom Moore-Jesper Fast

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi
Marc Staal-Anton Stralman
Justin Falk-John Moore

Henrik Lundqvist gets the start

PP1: Moore-Richards-Pyatt-Brassard-Stepan
PP2: Stralman-Girardi-Pouliot-Miller-Zuccarello

Scratches: Carl Hagelin (shoulder), Michael Del Zotto (flu)

The Rangers better not take the struggling Devils lightly. I expect the Devils will be playing with urgency and the Rangers need to bring their best game.
