The Rangers have lost three in a row, two in epic fashion, and now stand at 1-4 to start the season. Most of us said we would be happy with a 4-4-1 start to the season, considering the road trip. That’s still doable, but it begins tonight with a win against a Washington Capitals team that is also struggling. Their powerplay is lethal though, so it’s a matter of staying out of the box for New York.
On the ice, Adam Oates runs a hybrid 1-2-2/2-1-2 forecheck. They generally send one man in, but if the chances at a turnover are high, they will send the second man in. They are fairly aggressive when it comes to defensive zone schemes, playing an overload style and collapsing down when the puck is down low. Their powerplay strategy is a 1-3-1, and their penalty kill formation is an aggressive box.
