Practice notes: New lines; Miller on 4th line; no Del Zotto (flu)

October 15, 2013, by

Per Pat Leonard, the Rangers have new lines at practice to account for the roster moves made yesterday:

Brad Richards-Derick Brassard-Ryan Callahan
Benoit Pouliot-Derek StepanMats Zuccarello
Taylor Pyatt-Brian BoyleJesper Fast
J.T. Miller-Dom Moore-Derek Dorsett

It’s worth noting that Miller is on the fourth line again, with Moore and Dorsett. The attention is going to focus solely on Taylor Pyatt and his presence on the third line, and I’m inclined to agree here. There’s no real point in having Miller up if he’s not in the top-nine. He needs minutes. If they wanted a fourth line guy, there were other options available that were better suited for those minutes.

There were also new defensive pairings, with Michael Del Zotto not in practice today:

Ryan McDonaghDan Girardi
Marc StaalAnton Stralman
Justin Falk-John Moore

These are the pairs/lines we will see in Washington. Del Zotto did not make the trip to DC.

Odd step on the 3rd line.

  2. Walt says:

They put the fastest kid on the team, with the tracter trailer on the same line. You have got to be kidding, what BS!!!!!

    • Walt says:

To the person who disagrees with the above post, I really don’t care, but please explain why you don’t agree. The Fast kid is all over the ice, and they have to wait 15 minutes for Pyatt to catch up, and you disagree, what the heck?????

Really does this make any sense, I think not!

  3. Todd says:

I know it has only been a handful of games but how is it that Pyatt and Boyle are playing 2nd line? I know it doesn’t matter both those two are slow and soft. They do not deserve and will not produce as a top 6. I hope AV tries putting Fast with Stephan and Zuc. Small but fast!

    • Todd says:

what I meant to say is, it matters that they are both slow and soft.

    • Centerman21 says:

They just put the combos out. That’s the 3rd line. Pyatt-Boyle-Fast are the 3rd line. They were in St Louis. He can list his lines however he wants. Come game time. Stepans’ line will play the 2nd most mins.

  4. Dave says:

Come on guys. You should know that these lines may not necessarily be in the order that AV uses. Of course Stepan is 2nd line.

    • Centerman21 says:

Ranger fans are pretty agitated right now. It’s easy to find things to complain about with the 1-4 start. They had a rough beginning in 11/12 too before winning 7 in a row and 5 after that. As long as we finish ahead of the Islanders I’m ok.

  5. The Suit says:

Thought the order was confusing as well. Fixed it.

    • Dave says:

Next time around I’m going to list the Moore line first and just mess with everyone.

  6. Pete says:

Del Zoutta here? A trade cant be brewing this early can it?

  7. Frank Cerbone says:

Guys make a million dollars a year and can’t afford a flu shot?

Richards pulled the same thing at the beginning of last season.

Does Sather consult his players about meeting basic health care needs?

Or do NHL players lack basic insurance coverage?
My HMO offers free flu shots

    • Chris F says:

Are you joking? I’ve never had a flu shot in my life, and never had the flu.

    • Mikeyyy says:

Maybe he did get one. I got a flu shot and immediately was sick for two weeks with guess what. The flu

    • Paco33 says:

Actually, it was Gordie Clark who told MDZ not to have a flu shot.

  8. phil says:

rumors of DelZaster for Nail Y. in Edmonton…of course Rangers are going to have to throw in some more…now that Nails is finally on the roster tonight…the rumor has morphed to Sam Gagner who is out for another 5-6 weeks

    • Dave says:

I love Twitter. That is hilarious.

      • Puck Luck (@Centerman21) says:

It might not be so far from the relm of possibility. Edmonton is not exactly brimming with all star defenseman. It may not be Yakapov but Edmonton makes a good trade partner with the Rangers. The Rangers could use a 3rd line winger. Or a 2nd liner and move another guy down. A large grinder type that can go in the hard area. Or a scorer in general but a wing nontheless. Given Sathers history and Messier being there now, he knows the organization. Eberle might fit here.

        • Dave says:

On paper they do, but in reality they really don’t. The Rangers don’t have enough depth (note: defensive) forwards to entice Edmonton into dealing someone.

    • Walt says:

      Now that was funny!!!

  9. Bloomer says:

I hope AV had a face to face discussion with Dorcett. A player can still play with energy and jam and not become a fixture in the penalty box. Callahan is prove of that. If Dorcett can play aggressive without crossing the line, the so call 4th line will be very effective.

  10. Mikeyyy says:

Sheer brilliance leaving that last roster spot open.

That’s a message to the rest of the kids playing in the A. One spot open. Who wants it bad enough. Show us in the next few games.

  11. paulronty says:

I like these lines much better than previous lines and once Hags is back Pyatt is either gone or on fourth line.

  12. Bloomer says:

One more point about 4th lines… don’t underestimate them. Artem Anisimov played with Jody Shelly and Brandon Prust and that line rocked the house. Look at how well Bostons’ 4th. line played in the playoffs last year, they were a huge factor in both the Rangers and Penguins series. A effective 4th. line can win hockey games. I wonder what kind of stats Dave had on that line? I bet their corsi relativity readings were through the roof.

  13. bernmeister says:

AV, listen up, this is a HUGE mistake.
Get rid of Pyatt and deadweight.

    Brassard – Stepan – Nash
    Kreider – J.T. Miller- Callahan
    Hagelin – Lindberg – Fast
Richards – Dom Moore – Dorsett

Assuming the A listers return, Dorsett rebounds, and we play Richards (risking exposure to injury and potential inability to amnesty, this ^ lineup is the most complementary for speed, etc.

Benoit Pouliot has value can trade
Brian Boyle has value can trade

Mats Zuccarello barely has value. skill but no size; not in demand

Taylor Pyatt– not truly tradeable, min value

    • Spozo says:

I’m not sure about having 4 of your top 9 as rookies. This team is supposed to be competing for a Stanley cup not rebuilding.

  14. jerry says:

    how about this.
