Game 3: San Jose vs. Rangers

The Rangers are in San Jose tonight looking to build off their strong 3-1 victory over the LA Kings last night. The Sharks are a lot like the Kings, in that they have incredible depth down the middle (Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture) and solid goaltending (Antii Niemi). Their defense is solid, if slightly under appreciated.

On the ice, coach Todd McLellan has his Sharks mostly running an aggressive 2-1-2 forecheck, but will mix in some 1-2-2 depending on game situation. In the defensive zone schemes they overload the boards and play zone defense when the puck is at the points or down low. The power play is a 1-3-1 and their penalty kill formations are hybrid (depends on puck location/opposition setup).

Rangers lineup (probable):

Brad Richards-Derek Stepan-Rick Nash
Benoit Pouliot-Derick Brassard-Mats Zuccarello
Taylor Pyatt-Brian Boyle-Ryan Callahan
Arron Asham-Dominic Moore-Derek Dorsett

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi
Marc Staal-Michael Del Zotto
John Moore-Anton Stralman

Henrik Lundqvist gets the start.

PP1: Staal-Richards-Callahan-Stepan-Nash
PP2: Del Zotto-Girardi-Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello

Scratches: Carl Hagelin (shoulder), Jesper Fast (healthy), Justin Falk (healthy)

Game time is 10:30pm tonight. We are in for a long night. Don’t forget to check out New York Rangers Tickets link for deals to attend games.

Lets get the same results tonight, as last, and we all will be happy!

This road trip is a heck of a way to start a season, sure glad that MSG won’t need work again for years to come!

    • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

We all better enjoy the next 10 years. Nothing like dumping $1B in renovations and being asked to leave in a decade. Thanks NYC.

  2. Dave says:

Better to get this trip out of the way early. Cram 41 home games into 5.5 months instead of 6.5.

  3. Mikeyyy says:

After the kings game I got to wondering. Will it be better to add some torts to a av Vancouver squad or add a little av to a tortarella trained squad.

    Time will tell.

  4. Bloomer says:

The Sharks team is a good example on how to prepare and be ready for the opening game of the regular season. The Rangers put together a good 60 minute effort last night against the Kings. Tonight’s match against the Sharks will test the Rangers’ on their preparedness.

    • Dave says:

Well, they sure as hell can’t run and gun against this team. Wow they are good.

      • Spozo says:

Big, fast, and very skilled. That’s hard to compete with no matter what time of year it is.

That said, the Rangers are still in this one. As long as Hank doesn’t pull a Quick on a sharks clearing attempt :)

        • Dave says:

I think the bad luck has already evened out their good luck from last game.

One goal that results from hitting a ref, the other off Staal, not Nash done for the game (post on the main page).

  5. Bloomer says:

I know its very early in the season but based on how they finish the season and what I see from watching the Sharks so far……President Cup winners stamped all over them.

    • Dave says:

Their problem has always been winning in the postseason. The President’s Trophy isn’t the one they want.

  6. Spozo says:

Worst case scenario is Rick Nash has a concussion. That would be his second as a Ranger. I hope this isn’t the case but the guy took an elbow to the chin and didn’t look like he injured anything.

    • Dave says:

Yea, that’s not good. His second in two years. Could just be a precaution, but he looked dazed after taking that Stuart elbow.

  7. Dave says:

    Well this got ugly fast.

    • VinceR says:

Don’t envy your job of goal recap on this one.

      • Monty says:

it’s not a job. it’s a hobby i guess ;)) sorry.. just trying to be funny.

        • Dave says:

I wish this was a job. Definitely a hobby.

          • Monty says:

I was just pointing out that you have to write a goal recap which must be really painful after this game.. but ironically still call it a “hobby”! But honestly I love this blog!

      • Dave says:

I’ll get most of the breakdowns this year. Maybe the guys will pick up the same ratio of breakdowns as Biron gets starts.
