The roster is set. The tough decisions have been made. Now it’s time for the New York Rangers to take the ice in Phoenix for their first game of the season. The ‘Yotes are an intriguing team, since they don’t really score many goals and rely heavily on defense and goaltending to win games. Dave Tippett is one of the top coaches in the league, and he has consistently made Phoenix a playoff contender.

On the ice, Tippett runs a very conservative style of play. The Coyotes run a 1-2-2 hybrid trap, which is something they’ve been running for some time down in the desert. They aren’t anything out of they ordinary when it comes to defensive zone schemes (zone defense), power play strategies (umbrella), or penalty kill formations (hybrid, depends on puck location/situation). This is a very passive hockey club that will capitalize on mistakes in the neutral zone.

Rangers lineup:

Brad Richards-Derek Stepan-Rick Nash
Taylor Pyatt-Brian Boyle-Jesper Fast
Benoit Pouliot-Derick Brassard-Mats Zuccarello
JT Miller-Dominic Moore-Derek Dorsett

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi
Marc Staal-Michael Del Zotto
John Moore-Anton Stralman

Henrik Lundqvist gets the start.

PP1: Staal-Richards-Miller-Stepan-Nash
PP2: Del Zotto-Girardi-Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello

Scratches: Ryan Callahan (shoulder), Carl Hagelin (shoulder), Arron Asham (healthy), Justin Falk (healthy)

Calmly is a scratch and on the #1 line?

  2. Walt says:

    Let the games begin!!!!

  3. Bloomer says:

I hope the Rangers play with some skeep tonight.

  4. Puck Luck (@Centerman21) says:

I don’t think the team did much of the things they will do in the offensive zone in the preseason. I think AV ran a bland offensive structure purposely. I hope the top 3 lines can cycle the puck up the boards in the offensive zone. Create some long shifts for the Opposition to play on tired legs. Make the Yotes vacate the scoring area for some quality chances. Man I really hope the 2nd and 3rd line can do their jobs. 1 & 4 should be locks in there respective roles. If 2 & 3 can’t get er done, this team goes nowhere special.

  5. Dave says:

Richards with an ‘A’, in case you were questioning his leadership.

  6. Dave says:

Fast removed from the Boyle line. Dorsett is there. Shutdown 4th line lined up against the top PHX line. Standard AV.

  7. Evan M says:

where was the damn interference call?

  8. AD says:

So far, pleased and intrigued to see Miller get 1st line PP minutes with Stepan and Nash, and then for AV to shift him away from 4th line.

Maybe he’ll give our rookies more of a chance than I give him credit for.

  9. Bloomer says:

    That was painful
