Kristo among those sent to Hartford in today’s cuts

September 25, 2013, by

Per Andrew Gross, the Rangers have cut the following players, and sent them to the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack:

Goalies: Cam Talbot

Defensemen: Tommy Hughes, Aaron Johnson, Dylan McIlrath, Danny Syvret

Forwards: Micheal Haley, Michael Kantor, Andrew Yogan, Danny Kristo

While most of these were predictable (I got 8 of 9 correct), Kristo being sent to the AHL is a bit of a surprise. Many thought he was playing well, albeit slightly inconsistent. My guess is that Kristo will need top-six minutes, and it is something he won’t get at the NHL level right now (a reason why Brandon Mashinter may still be here). Plus, he has been outplayed by the other kids vying for a top-six role while Ryan Callahan and Carl Hagelin are injured (Oscar Lindberg, Jesper Fast, Marek Hrivik).

A quick note on Mashinter: With Haley cut, Mashinter appears to have leapfrogged him on the depth chart. The kid is playing well, but has a long way to go to supplant the Derek Dorsett’s and Arron Asham’s of the team.

Dorsett is going to be our 4th line winger. I have no doubt about that. Rangers were ecstatic to have him included in the Gaborik trade.

  2. Ray says:

AV has said he likes to carry eight defensemen so practices go better. Does this mean Bickel is back in NY? [Better Falk and Bickel in the press box than Allen, who should be playing somewhere.]

  3. Leatherneckinlv says:

Team looks good but there is one glaring aspect that has me worried….team toughness. I would keep Bickel around for that purpose.

with Stepan, Callahan and Hagelin not in the line up we will see Hrivik and my guess is Manshinter on the big club.

I am also amazed at the poise Conner Allen showed so far. With Moore and Allen proving themselves and gaining the trust of the coaching staff this team is poised for some really good things.

Those who are afraid of McIlrath as being a bust….don’t….his skill set is elsewhere and he will be with the club soon

Also AV said easier for d-man to play up than forward to play back. Bickel has some forward experience. Therefore Bickel is your #8 d.

  5. Mikeyyy says:

Excited about seeing the d. We are pretty deep.

Very happy lindberg and fast made the first cut. And that miller is still around. When you see him at its like something is about to click with him and he’s going to be a superstar.

Would have liked to seen more of Talbot.

  6. Bloomer says:

Until Kristo learns how to pick up his man, he will never make it in the NHL. I agree the Rangers defence is deep, however their forwards are lightweights and will get pushed around. They will have to dress both Asham and Dorsett to avoid getting pounded.

Absolutely. Why does the 4th line just need one guy? why not two tougher players..Dorsett is not big enough to handle the role. He should just play and not be an enforcer type
