Lines for tonight appear to be set

September 23, 2013, by

Per Steve Zipay, the lines for tonight’s preseason game in Calgary appear to be set:

Chris Kreider-Brad Richards-Rick Nash
Marek Hrivik-Brian Boyle-Jesper Fast
Taylor Pyatt-Oscar Lindberg-Danny Kristo
Brandon Mashinter-Darroll Powe-Arron Asham

Marc Staal-Michael Del Zotto
John Moore-Anton Stralman
Justin Falk-Stu Bickel

Henrik Lundqvist
Cam Talbot

The top two defense pairings and the top line have been standard all preseason. It’s interesting to see Fast split from Lindberg and Kristo, since that trio had a ton of success and chemistry in the Traverse City Tournament. Also, it appears the fourth line and bottom pairing are set specifically for competition purposes. All five appear to be in the picture from a depth perspective.

The third line may be a real line AV wants to look at. Lindberg and Kristo may start the season in NY. No sense having them play with Fast, who will start in Hartford.

  2. Mikeyyy says:

Looks like it’s all up in the air still.

Each of the guys on the roster has something to bring. Is it what av feels he needs is the question.

  3. Matt Josephs says:

4th Line is irrelevant, same as the third d pair.

Hope we start moving more towards what the actual lineup will look like soon.

    • Dave says:

Falk will likely be #7, so I don’t think he’s irrelevant. Powe/Asham are fighting for 12/13/14.

    • WilliamW says:

Bickel and Mashinter are largely irrelevant. The other guys are competing for a spot on the roster. 13 F and 8 D remember

  4. FrankCerbone says:

Wonder what happens if Kreider has another bad game?

Really think Mashinter has a shot at making the team as he is tougher than Dorsett and cheaper than both Dorsett & Stepan.

Can’t sign Stepan unless over priced guys like Dorsett, Asham, and Pyatt are gone.

    • FrankCerbone says:

CORRECTION-Mashinter cheaper than Dorsett, Asham, & Pyatt. Toughness would dramatically improve if 2 from Mashinter, Haley, Bickle, & McIlrath made team.

      • Mark says:

You are sooo correct about this. If we need to have guys like Pyatt and Powe produce and they are the difference between winning and losing then the Rangers are in trouble. Not saying that they are not good players but the fact is that the top players need to make the difference and then the Rangers can go with Mashinter and Haley etc. On the other hand saying that Asham is overpaid is mainly a reflection of how Sather has spent money. It should not be that a guy making less than 2% of the cap should be cut because he is expensive. That is likely why we lost Orr a few years back.

      • WilliamW says:

Bickel is terrible and McIlrath is not ready

Haley seems to have some speed and energy but is far from a “heavyweight”. Don’t see him beating out Dorsett much less Asham for a role. Mashinter is big but not a tough guy as far as I can tell

  5. Mikeyyy says:

Let’s hope for a good game.

This isn’t a matter of who makes the team out of camp. It’s about who gets traded to make room for stepan.
