Best post-lockout Ranger tournament

Offseason tournament bracket

As the dog days of summer approach, it’s going to be relatively quiet around the league. To get through this, Matt Josephs of Blue Line Station came to me with a pretty solid idea: Putting together an NCAA style tournament to see who everyone thinks is the best player to put on a Rangers sweater post-lockout (2005 lockout). Matt came up with the 64 Rangers to use, and I put them in a bracket in Excel. The bracket, pictured above, is set up like an NCAA bracket, and will not be reseeded after each round. If for some reason Olli Jokinen beats out Henrik Lundqvist in the first round, then he will face the winner of the 8/9 matchup, not the top seed left in the bracket.

Each afternoon, we will post one matchup here at BSB, and ask you to vote on who the better Ranger was. Voting will be simple, each post on BSB has a thumbs up or a thumbs down icon at the end. Vote the thumbs up to vote for the higher seed (1 seed is higher than 16 seed), and the thumbs down to vote for the lower seed. Again, the thumbs up is for the higher seed, not the higher number.

We will begin tomorrow with the first matchup in the Tom Renney bracket: Jokinen vs. Lundqvist.

Hope everyone enjoys this, and thanks to Matt at Blue Line Station for coming up with the idea. Be sure to check out Blue Line Station as one of your stops for Ranger blogging.

  1. kinda obvious says:

I dont really think this is much of a contest….its Obviously Hank.

    • Dave says:

Well yea, that’s what most are expecting. Some of the other matchups will be interesting though.

  2. Sally says:

This will be fun. When do we find out who did the off-season plans?
When is Suit revealing his master plan?

  3. John says:

    Happy Bastille Day! To rangerfaninparis.

  4. supermaz says:

Can I be the first to tell you that you have Malik on the bracket twice.

    • Dave says:

He was just that good that we had to put him on twice.

Thanks for pointing that out, going to update it shortly with Derek Morris as the #13 seed in the John Tortorella bracket.

  5. KC says:

It’s sad that when talking about post NHL Lockout that we have to mention which one…

  6. Matt Josephs says:

Apologies about putting Malik on the bracket twice. That was my bad.

Of course Henrik will win, but the main reason why I wanted to do this was because I wanted to see how much we as fans appreciate certain players to an extent. Like I almost wouldn’t be surprised if Avery makes it to the final four. That’s just how much the dude is loved.

Not to mention I just think it’ll be fun to compare some of these players against one another and see how the voting goes.

    • Dave says:

I don’t see how this gets a thumbs down…some people are just dicks.

But yea, this is the whole point. It will probably be Hank vs. Jags in the finals…but seeing how far Avery goes, or who wins Staal vs. Stepan, how far Dubi goes, Hank vs. Cally, Hags vs. Kreider/Ortmeyer. Interesting matchups.

  7. Monty says:

    It’s obviously Jagr… not much of a contest! 🙂

  8. becky says:

All my money is on Freddy Sjoes and the Korpedo
