Free agency open thread

Free agency is upon us, only four days late after a pointless lockout. Earlier this week, the Penguins locked up Kris Letang, and the Flyers signed both Mark Streit (acquired via trade from the Islanders) and Vinny Lecavalier (bought out by the Lightning). There are a lot of interesting names on the market, but the overall strength of this free agent class is weak.

As for the Rangers, they don’t have much room to work with, so don’t expect them to be active. Use this as your open thread for the day.

I’d like to start hearing the Rangers locking up their RFA’s soon. They Flyers have locked up most of theirs so what’s to stop them or another team from signing an offer sheet to Mac or Stepan?

The possibility of an offer sheet is definitely concerning, especially with the Rangers so close up against the cap.

    rangers are crickets
this year. not one intimidating presence no grease behind any elbows, they are going to be softies like the canucks when they lost in 7 to Boston. Even If they are succesful they will get mauled in playoffs. Off with Sather’s head. This lineup is going to get bullied and battered. on the other hand Columbus just got real.

7 years for Clarkson? NHL owners have to be the biggest clowns in the known universe. Complete joke after the lockout shenanigans.

Absolutely. Contract term limits the “hill we die on”, yet here we are months after the CBA and 7 year deals, no big deal. Joke.

Looking at the ridiculous contracts (not only cap hit but length!) having Richards on a 1 year contract doesn’t seem so awful

Clowe signed with New Jersey. I’m really not happy about losing him.

  • Jul 5, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Rangers won’t regret letting Clowe walk. He’s very injury-prone and has lost a step. Woulda been smarter for Devils to overpay to keep Clarkson. Jersey will miss the playoffs for the foreseeable future.

For the relatively negligible difference in Clowe and Clarkson’s contracts, why not bite the bullet and keep the younger, more productive guy?

    • Jul 5, 2013 at 2:17 pm
      Permalink

Yeah I dont get that, why give Clowe 4.85 for 5 when you could’ve has Clarkson for 5.25 for 7. I mean both deals stink but give me the guy who hasn’t gotten his noodle bashed a handful of times, amongst other things…

I think it’s obvious Clarkson wanted out of Jersey. He is probably a huge Leafs fan, he’s from there.

Would anyone have wanted to buy-out Richards and sign Weiss to his contract?

    • Jul 5, 2013 at 3:56 pm

Nope. Though, if Richards was bought out the top end guys (relatively speaking) were never on the table. Having said that, I didn’t see Bozak getting 5 years. I’ll be curious to see what Derek Roy gets.

Clowes’ almost 5 million per and Clarkson 5.25 per makes Richards contract look cheap. These GM are nuts, a player lockout for what? These owners have no self control and I feel absolutely no pity for them should they lose money. And BTW if they raise ticket prices, I may of attended my last NHL game.

Bloomer nailed it on the head, these GM’s are smoking something that may be ill legal!

I like Clowe, and Clarkson both, but for the money, and term of the contracts, Slats is being made out to look like Einstein!!

One other point of interest, what in the world makes the Flyers think that Ray Emery is going to be any better the second time around in Filthadelphia?????
