Rangers sign London Knights UFA defenseman Tommy Hughes

April 1, 2013, by

This one was tweeted to me by OHL scout Victor Carneiro, and I’m a little delayed in posting this (Thanks for the tip Vic!). The Rangers have signed Tommy Hughes, a 6’2, 215 lb defenseman from the London Knights. Hughes, an undrafted free agent, just finished his fourth season with London, putting together a line of 1-15-16 in 67 games. The right-handed defenseman will be another solid addition to what is currently a weak defensive pool of prospects.

Hughes is the second undrafted UFA signing of the offseason. Connor Allen of UMass was added earlier last week

What, if anything, do you, or the rest of the staff, know about Tommy Hughes?

At 6’2″, 215 lbs, he isn’t the biggest, but nice enough in size. Can he skate, is he a hitter, does he drop the gloves?

I like asking these questions, so we have an idea of the type of player he may be. Thanks

From what Vic said, he’s a defensive defenseman in the mold of Girardi. He likely won’t be a Girardi, but that’s his style of play.

We definitely need to restock the D-Line closet….Has anyone heard if Andrej Sustr from Neb-Omaha has signed with anyone…?????
