Game 32 preview: Rangers at Flyers

Barton Silverman/The New York Times

Barton Silverman/The New York Times

The Rangers are in Philly tonight to take on the Flyers for the fourth and final time this season. The Rangers have taken two games (1/29: 2-1, 3/5: 4-2) and dropped one (1/24: 2-1) so far, and a win tonight would seal the season series with the Flyers. It would also help the Rangers in playoff positioning, as they need every point they can get.

As we’ve discussed before, Peter Laviolette throws two different forechecking looks at the opposition. The first look is the 2-1-2 forecheck, and once the Flyers get a lead, they tend to switch to a more conservative 2-3 left wing lock. Both systems send two forecheckers into the zone, but the 2-3 leaves three guys back, while the 2-1-2 sends an additional forechecker around the blue line and leaves two guys back.

In their own zone, the Flyers play a low zone collapse, which is similar to the Rangers. This creates a logjam in the high-priced real estate, but gives some leeway at the point for puck movement.

On special teams, the Flyers play an umbrella powerplay (like most NHL teams) and a diamond penalty kill.

Loving this first period…I know the Flyers suck, but it’s still a rivalry game on a night they honored Timonen and they are desperate.

Dave, you had the lines way wrong, but of course I don’t know who didn’t…these were a surprise and I’m liking how they are working, up and down all four of them. I wouldn’t mind a few tweaks, and of course with Zucc coming in, we’ll have to see what happens.

Let’s hope we get another solid 40 minutes and hopefully a few more goals.

Love the response to a couple of unlucky goals too! What a goal BR-CK-DZ-CK! I mean I know it’s just the flyers, but lets hope this outburst of offense continues into Ottawa!
