Staals are brothers.

Staals are brothers.

The Rangers really need to end their three game slide, and tonight is a great opportunity to do just that. The Hurricanes are playing a lot better of late, even though they have lost two in a row (won six of seven prior), but the Rangers have a dominant record against the Southeast Division over the past few seasons. Of course, if the Blueshirts continue playing the way they have in the previous three games, they won’t win diddly.

The Canes had a bit of a makeover this season, acquiring Jordan Staal from Pittsburgh and signing Alex Semin from Washington. They also added Joe Corvo to the defense. The Canes started off slow, but have been surging lately. If not for a hot Winnipeg team, they would still own first place in the Southeast Division.

On the ice, the Canes look like they still play a 1-2-2 hybrid trap, meaning they may forecheck when the opportunity presents itself, but will mainly play a trapping style. Based on the score, they may switch to a 2-1-2 forecheck to pressure the defense and cause turnovers to get back in the game.

In the defensive zone, the Canes play a variation of the low zone collapse. They collapse four guys in the middle, but send one man out to pressure the puck. That man will vary, and depends on puck location.

On special teams, the Canes run an umbrella powerplay and alternate between a diamond and a box penalty kill.
