Food for thought: Can the King keep streaking?

Can the King keep his streak alive?

In my humble opinion, despite the absence of a Stanley Cup, Henrik Lundqvist is already the greatest goaltender ever to wear Ranger red white and blue. Likely to reach four hundred career wins with ease (health allowing), a legitimate chance at a Stanley Cup, and numerous additional Vezina’s, there won’t be much the superstar Swede won’t have achieved when all is said and done. His career is already proceeding at an unprecedented pace as a Ranger goaltender.

Right now, Lundqvist owns a pretty impressive NHL record. He is the first goaltender to win at least thirty games in seven seasons in a row to begin his NHL career. He’s been extending his own record for a season or two already. Here’s the food for thought: can he continue that impressive streak this year? Do you get a pass (aka an asterix next to your record) because of the shortened season?

In the grand scheme of things –should the Rangers go on to win a Cup– no one will care about a personal milestone, especially someone so focussed and intent on success as Lundqvist. However, with Marty Biron likely to see increased time due to the compressed schedule and with the playing field unclear at this stage, the Lundqvist record could be in jeopardy of coming to an end.

One thing is clear, if Lundqvist indeed manages to extend his record, the Rangers will have enjoyed a strong regular season and will have positioned themselves well for the playoffs. We can only hope that the record continues for a little while longer.

30 wins in maybe 36 (tops 38) games? Can’t see it. Besides the stinker or 2 he will inevitably have, there will be games where the offense is dead, and we lose 2-1, 2-0, 1-0 or so.

And if he plays 45 games, then we probably overused him, and he may not get to 30 for that reason.

Can’t see any way he gets to 30 wins.

I just don’t think it’s possible. If Biron gets 15 games, that means Hank is getting 33 games. He would have to go 30-3.

  3. Walt says:

I don’t realy believe that it makes any difference to me, the team, and Hank for that matter, if he doesn’t win 30 this year. Let’s face it, Hank wants the cup, and if it means giving up personal records, so be it!

  4. Joe says:

If he goes on in the next three seasons, after this one, to win thirty. All onlookers will acknowledge that this is an asterisk season. The king will always be looked at as this being a streak. Even if someone should break it, the talk will be of the shortened season Herik played.

Until he wins a cup, he is #2 behind Ricky.
Sorry but personal achievements aside only lord Stanley’s silver will propel him past the goalie that made me a rangers fan.

  6. Joe says:

He’s right. It will take a cup!
