Today is one of my favorite days of the year: the draft. Round one will be today, with rounds 2-7 taking place tomorrow afternoon. Tonight, the Rangers hold the 28th overall pick, but with lots of moves expected tonight, the Rangers might not stay in that position. Don’t forget to check out our Draft Coverage page for analysis of many potential first round picks.

We will be live blogging the event tonight and tomorrow, so make sure to check back often for updates on picks, moves, and other happenings in Pittsburgh. Rangers moves will be bolded.

Join us after the jump for updates.

Before the draft, there was one move that took place, which saw the Flyers deal Sergei Bobrovsky to Columbus for three draft picks (2nd and 4th in 2012, 4th in 2013).

6:58 – Dave had to step out for a minute so I (Kevin) will be with you for the first bit of the draft.

7:06 – Obviously, the draft is not starting on time.  Sounds very much like Edmonton is planning to take Ryan Murray, not Nail Yakupov, with the first pick.

7:09 – Gary Bettman kicks off the draft.  Rangers GM Glen Sather is on the phone, according to Jim Cerny.

7:14 – Edmonton takes Nail Yakupov first overall, ending the suspense.

7:16 – First trade of the night.  Newsday’s Arthur Staple reports that the Islanders have acquired defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky from Anaheim for a 2013 second-round pick.

7:24 – Columbus takes defenseman Ryan Murray second overall.

7:26 – Another trade.  Washington gets playmaking center Mike Ribeiro for F Cody Eakin and the 54th overall pick.

7:27 – Bobby Ryan is now on the record as wanting to be traded by Anaheim.  The hometown Flyers are his top choice and are known to have made an offer to the Ducks.

7:29 – Columbus GM Scott Howson reiterated on TSN that he does not expect to trade Rick Nash tonight.

7:30 – Montreal takes Sarnia Sting C Alex Galchenyuk third.

7:42 – Dave here. Thanks to Kevin for covering for me. Isles take Griffin Reinhart. That’s two defensemen they’ve acquired today. Solid upgrades for them.

7:46 – Toronto takes Morgan Rielly, another defenseman for them.

7:58 – And Anaheim throws everyone for a loop. Hampus Lindholm goes #6 overall. High rising stock, but was projected to go mid-first.

8:02 – Those are some harsh words from Bobby Ryan for the Ducks. “Whenever there is talk about adding a piece, I’m the one discussed going the other way. Trade me.”

8:04 – Minnesota takes Matt Dumba. Solid pick for them.

8:09 – Pittsburgh trades Jordan Staal to Carolina for 8th pick overall and Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin.

8:12 – With that pick they just acquired, Pittsburgh takes Derrick Pouliot…solid defenseman.

8:25 – Winnipeg takes Jacob Trouba…headed to Michigan. Big defenseman.

8:35 – Tampa takes Slater Koekkoek. That’s a lot of defensemen in the first ten picks. Also, did best last name thus far.

8:45 – And Filip Forsberg is finally off the board. Slides all the way to #11 for Washington. Good job with that trade for Varlamov Colorado…

8:50 – And there goes Mikhail Grigorenko to Buffalo at #12. Solid pick for them.

8:55 – Dallas takes Radek Faksa. I guess that’s their replacement for Mike Ribeiro.

9:04 – Buffalo gets the 14th pick from Calgary for the 21st pick and the 42nd pick.

9:05 – Buffalo takes Zemgus Girgensons with their second pick of the night.

9:12 – Ottawa takes the hometown boy Cody Ceci.

9:18 – Washington takes Tom Wilson with their second pick of the night.

9:25 – San Jose takes Tomas Hertl with pick #17.

9:30 – Chicago takes Teuvo Teravanen, who slid all the way to #18. He was ranked #7 by TSN.

9:36 – Tampa takes Andrei Vasilevski with their second pick of the night. Between him and Lindberg, they have two solid prospects in net now.

9:40 – Philly takes Scott Laughton, who was high on my board. Lots of boos from the crowd, as expected, when Philly approached the podium.

9:48 – Calgary takes Mark Jankowski with the pick acquired from Buffalo when they traded down. Jankowski was not projected to be a first round pick. Interesting that they passed on Olli Maata.

9:55 – Pittsburgh takes Olli Maata with their second pick of the night.

10:03 – Florida picks Mike Matheson, another defenseman.

10:08 – Boston takes Malcolm Subban, a goalie, with the 24th overall pick. Best part: He has to play against his brother PK in Montreal.

10:18 – St. Louis takes Jordan Schmaltz at #25…the 12th defenseman taken in this draft so far.

10:23 – Vancouver takes Brendan Gaunce. Kevin really liked this kid, but he goes to Vancouver.

10:33 – Phoenix takes Henrik Samuelsson, Ulf’s kid. Big bodied forward, something the ‘Yotes desperately needed.

10:40 – Rangers select defenseman Brady Skjei. Read about him here.

10:43 – Darren Dreger is reporting that the Rangers were in discussions with Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal. Considering what Carolina gave up for him, the equivalent deal is Derek Stepan, Tim Erixon OR Dylan McIlrath, AND a first round pick.

10:45 – The Devils take Stefan Matteau!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

10:50 – LA wraps up the first round with selecting Tanner Pearson.
