Mats Zuccarello rumored to KHL (updated)

Via Szymon Szemberg, winger Mats Zuccarello has signed a two-year deal with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL. The 24-year-old would have been a restricted free agent this summer. Zuccarello ends his brief Rangers career with an 8-18-26 line in 52 games while posting a 25-40-65 line in 73 AHL games. A broken wrist sidelined him for the end of the regular season and postseason, which was unfortunate because the blueshirts really could have used his speed and offensive skill in all three rounds.

***Update: This is now being denied by MZA’s agent.

Before people go crazy with this rumor, people have to realize that MZA is a restricted free agent, therefore Glen can’t work something out with him until after the draft. It would be a pretty dumb move on MZA’s part to defect to the KHL without waiting for an offer from the Rangers. You can’t have the KHL and the Rangers negotiate against each other if one party isn’t even allowed to negotiate yet.

Good luck to matts its ashame he didnt work out for the rangers.

  2. Tim B says:

He better stay with the rangers

  3. Dave says:

Even if we are jumping the gun a bit here, Zuccarello really has no place on this roster. He wants top six minutes, which he won’t get here.

I can see him filling a fourth line role, similar to what Stephen Gionta does with NJ, but that’s really it. He’s a matchup kind of guy.

what kind of $ to sign DZ and stralman? we’re paying under $2M for both right now. does that go up to a combined $6M this summer?

    • Blueshirt in Paris says:

6m??? No way. My guess 2.5 for MDZ and Stral will get 1.3 form another team.

The guy needs to use a shorter stick. You don’t see Marty st Louis using a long stick. It would help him protect the puck better

    • Chris F says:

If you really did speak with Matts’ brother, and I’m skeptical, the guy is a tool for mouthing off to you about closed-door issues that Zuccarello shared with him. I don’t see the brother of an NHL players being so imprudent with this type of information.

so are you calling me a liar why would i lie about something like this you know you guys on here have been nothing but ignorant to me every time i post comments i had enough of this shit im going to the editor of the blog this is bull any more and for your info thats what his brother told me ya moron

        • Dave says:

I don’t think he was calling you a liar, and I believe he was calling Zucc’s brother a tool for telling you stuff like that. I don’t think there was any malicious intent there.

But if you feel you are being attacked every time you comment, definitely reach out to me and link me to the posts and I’ll go through and read them. I want everyone to know their opinion is wanted and valued.

That said, if there’s a disagreement, be prepared to defend your opinion.

“I’m going to the editor of this blog” hehehe

I will tweet at Zucc that his brother is talking contracts to people on facebook and that you are airing his business to a blog. Please forward me the editor’s info so I may tweet it to Matt so he can also complain to the editor.

          • Dave says:

            Chill Vince.

              Um… did I miss something?

First, Rahm, my apologies if you took offense to my comment. I’m not calling you a liar, I don’t know a thing about you, and as far as I can tell, I’ve never interacted with you on this blog before.

But, regardless of who you are, I’m always a tad skeptical of anonymous blog commenters claiming to have inside info about anything. I’m skeptical because of my own experiences, it had nothing to do with you, or who you are. Its a shame you took it so personally.

              • rob sahm says:

and its sahm not rahm thanks

              • Chris F says:

Ok, Sahm. I do believe it was you getting bent out of shape, but I’ll leave that for the community to judge.

  7. Chris F says:

Sorry, but Zuccarello has absolutely no role with this team. Kid’s got talent, for sure, but he’s substantially undersized on a team in need of some more muscle. Hagelin will become whatever it was Rangers fans were expecting from Zucs.

  8. Ray says:

MZA is one of the most skillful players to ever play the game (only Gaborik compares on the current squad), but it remains to be seen if he has the strength to be an NHLer. He has no intention of playing in the AHL when he an be a star in Sweden or Russia. I’d like to see Sather promise Zuccarello that he either makes the team or Sather will trade him to a team that will play him. I’d also like to see him tried on left wing. You can only have two top six right wings and Gaborik, Callahan are strong competition. Ironic that the Rangers lost because they were out-skilled with MZA not suited up.
