Valentenko signs with KHL

It looks like Pavel Valentenko is headed back to Russia. Per Evgeny Belousov, Valentenko has signed with Avangard Omsk of the KHL. This confirms the relatively cryptic tweet that Valentenko himself tweeted after the Connecticut Whale season ended last week:

It was two great seasons for me here, in Hartford! I was proud to be one of the part of Wolfpack/Whale team! Thanks everyone for support!

It was a bit curious to see him tweet that, considering he was still a part of the Ranger organization, but now it is clear as to why.

What is also clear is that Valentenko really had no future with the Rangers. He is blocked by a number of current roster players and a few other prospects like Dylan McIlrath and Tim Erixon. In fact, the acquisition of Erixon and the emergence of Stu Bickel might have sealed his fate.

Update: Per Laurie Carr, the deal with Avangard is a two year deal.

Personally I could never understand this love affair with Stu Bickel. Valentenko should have been the guy called up, he’s a much better D and his cannon from the point would have helped the Ranger PP.

I wish V-tank the best of luck. The truth be known, he was a throw in for the Gomez trade, and he never worked out. I always thought he would make the team because he hit hard, and his shot from the point, but his skating was that poor, and his down fall.

Remember that preseason game where he threw around Tomas Holmstrom in front of the crease like a rag doll? I was convinced he would be part of our d-core. Oh well.

Valentenko is an AHL player, pure and simple. Stu may have his faults, and Rangers management will have a decision to make about him next season, but he’s a better skater than PV, and pretty much does everything else just as well. Some guys are just not good enough for the NHL; and Valentenko is one of them. I’m glad he’s getting a chance in the Russian league. Regards-

it is going to be tough to win this series playing 14 skaters against 18 for the Devils .You only have so much to give

Well he would have to go through waivers if the Rangers were to call him up. He probably wpuldnt have made the team anyway
