Back to the old lines, many rejoice

May 12, 2012, by

During yesterday’s practice, Pat Leonard tweeted the lines that coach John Tortorella ran. These lines are likely to be the lines run tonight for Game Seven. Many called for Chris Kreider to move back up to a line with Derek Stepan and Ryan Callahan, and they got their wish:

Carl Hagelin-Brad Richards-Marian Gaborik
Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Ryan Callahan
Artem Anisimov-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust
Mike Rupp-John Mitchell-Ruslan Fedotenko

The defensive pairings, as always, remained the same.

It’s good to see Kreider back up where many, including myself, think he belongs. That line has some great speed, skill, and tenacity and had great success when used earlier this series. The Rangers will need every weapon they have to win their second Game Seven in as many series.

Going back to the three set lines as printed above, we have two decent scoring lines, where the Caps can’t put their shut down line on the Richards line. The second line can score, and with AA on the third line, we stand a chance to not only shut down the Caps big scoring line, but get some offense ourselves.

The key tonight is to keep puck possesion, fore check, play physical, have Hank stand on his head, and score more than two goals. If they can do this, we win, if not, we are in for a long night.

Torts, give these lines a chance to form some chemistry, and let them skate as units for more than one shift. The D has got to stand up, pound Ovi, and their other skilled players, Semin, Backstrom, etc, and be stinggy. Is that asking for too much?

    • Dave says:

AA/Boyle provides some nice tertiary offense with the ability to shut down the Ovechkin line. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

To death do us part keep the lines together.McD must carry the puck up ice more and lead and join the rush.Speed kills use it.Pound Ovi,Backstrom,Semin,Green and yes Chimera. When given space to shot fake the shot get the Caps to drop down and step in to attack.

This all seems to be part of the plan. This team is made for game 7s. Give the caps a slow look. Let them show their hands. Then adjust with home ice advantage.

I like the line change. However the second PP should also change

Hagelin AA Kreider (possibly Mitchell or Boyle for a face off and screening)

    W Girafivand Staal on D
