Rangers return Tim Erixon to Connecticut

The Rangers have returned defenseman Tim Erixon to the Connecticut Whale of the AHL. Erixon was initially called up two weeks ago to serve as another option for the Rangers to look at on defense. In his five game call up, Erixon earned his first two points as a NHL player, both assists, a -2 rating, and six hits. Erixon averaged roughly ten minutes of ice time while playing on the third pair.

Erixon had been a healthy scratch for the previous two games. The return of Erixon to the Whale likely means that Steve Eminger is ready to return from his sprained ankle.

The competition for the last spot on defense is now between Eminger, Anton Stralman, and Jeff Woywitka.

I don’t understand why he is being sent down. I thought he played well in his limited time here and he has some ofensive skills. I think he is a better option than Emminger, Stralman, or Woywitka. What am I missing?

He likely just needs more time to develop.

      Rob,

Erixson is 21 years old with very limited NHL-level experience. The Playoffs are here. The Rangers cannot afford to have a wet-behind-the-ears defenseman, no matter how much promise he shows, being distracted by playoff intensity. He’s bound to make mistakes in front of a roaring playoff crowd, mistakes the Rangers cannot be willing to accept. He needs more regular season experience with the Rangers (next season) before taking a shot in the playoffs.

Eminger has over 10 years of NHL experience, in addition to some minimal playoff time.

Woywitka has six years of NHL play under his belt, with minimal playoff experience.

Stralman has several years of NHL experience and has shown some offensive flare that could prove useful come playoff time.

These guys are all without question better suited for the NHL playoffs than Erixson at this point in time. No need to rush these kids. The same goes for Kreider.

Sit Staal already…he is the worst D man on the team…

Defensemen need more time to develop than forwards so it is no big thing about Erixon being sent down to the Whale.

Erixon needs 20+ minutes a night in the AHL a whole lot more than sitting in the press box watching the NYR.

Erixon will get his share of playoff hockey with the Whale (who really need him in their lineup)

Young Timmy has some talent but he is a softie. He makes Eric Christensen look like a tough guy.
