Game 22 Preview: Rangers at Hurricanes

December 1, 2011, by

Standings: Pittsburgh (8-14-4), Rangers (13-5-3)

Leading Scorer: Jeff Skinner (10-12-22)

Goaltender: Cam Ward (3.05 GAA, .910 SV%)

Rangers Projected Lines (projected):

Artem Anisimov-Derek Stepan-Marian Gaborik
Ruslan Fedotenko-Brad Richards-Ryan Callahan
Carl Hagelin-Brian Boyle-John Mitchell
Sean Avery-Brandon Dubinsky-Brandon Prust

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi
Michael Del Zotto-Mike Sauer
Jeff Woywitka-Steve Eminger

Martin Biron gets the start tonight.

Scratches/Injuries: Marc Staal (concussion symptoms), Mike Rupp (knee), Wojtek Wolski (groin), Andre Deveaux (suspension), Anton Stralman (healthy)

Preview: Carolina is in a state of flux. They fired Paul Maurice, replaced him with Kirk Muller, and lost in Muller’s debut to the Florida Panthers. Only Jeff Skinner is capable of scoring on a regular basis, only two players are in the positive side of the +/- stat, and the combination of Eric Staal and Tomas Kaberle is a whopping -30 with 5 goals and 17 points combined. Cam Ward’s GAA is atrocious, but that’s not entirely his fault. In short, this team can’t do anything right.

The Hurricanes have the speed and skill to make things a nightmare for the Rangers, who simply do not play well against quick teams. However, this team does not seem to like playing defense at all. They have the second worst goal differential in hockey (-25), and have allowed the most goals this season (86). The Rangers need to utilize that 2-1-2 forecheck and get to the Canes defensemen, who are stuggling mightily. Force turnovers, keep the Canes in their own zone, and win the game.

This has trap game written all over it. The Rangers are coming off three straight emotional wins against conference and divisional rivals, and have one of the toughest 8 game stretches they will see this year following this game.

Crazy Thought: Dubinsky actually gets a goal.

Worst trade ever for the rangers was Rick Middleton to Bs for Phils buddy Hodge

This is a game we should win, lets see if this is the new and improved Rangers or the “same old”Rangers.I thought Dubie was going to get it going last game after The Shelley stuff. He has been invisible since he was relegated to the 4th line.Hope he gets going tonight.Lets Go Rangers!

It’s the end of the first, Rangers down 2 to 1. I was afraid of this, they seem to let down when they play teams that aren’t strong. Well there still are two periods left, Lets go rangers!!!!!

  5. bob says:

You are so right about their defense. The Rangers could pitch a tent in front of Ward.

  6. bob says:

WOW,I saw the Rangers coming back with the way Carolina defense was playing, but not this easily.Great effort. This ain’t the same old Rangers!

  7. bob says:

We didn’t play down to them.this is the new and improved Rangers.Gotta feel sorry for Cam Ward, only one goal was really on him.You called that one Dave.

I was there tonight in section 314. The ramgers fans were in 310. And they were louder than the canes fans. every ranger goal sounded like a canes goal sans the video of Rick flair going wooh. Wooh

From a live standpoint. Baron played really good, several fans thought he was Hank with some of the shots through traffic he was stopping.

2nd period torts started mixing up the lines.

Pp was really mobile. Moving the pick around a lot.

Woywitka and Emminger look worse in person than they do on tv.

Emminger looks really bad. Shell shocked and is playing afraid of every pass he makes.

I think they are rather quite effective and played rather well, especially the outlet pass to Anisimov for the Gaborik goal was a thing of beauty by Woywitka. Give them some love. These two have earned it

Hagelin and Mitchell are 4 for 4, they are keepers over Wolski and Christensen. These two have really added another element to the team. Very very impressed and you can see that they have bought into the team concept. Mitchell taking that puck in the face attests to that
