Following up on my post yesterday about how Zdeno Ciger and Matt Barnaby became Brandon Dubinsky, I wanted to do a little more research about current roster players and how they wound up on the Rangers.  We all know that the Brian Leetch trade led to Mike Sauer, but something else from that draft caught my eye, and it was also a part of the 2004 firesale.  Signing Vladimir Malakhov in 2000 may have been a poor choice, but the end result was Marc Staal.

  • 7/10/2000: Rangers sign Vladimir Malakhov.
  • 3/8/2004: Rangers trade Vladimir Malakhov to the Philadelphia Flyers for Rick Kozak and the #41 overall in the 2004 draft.
  • 7/30/2005: Rangers trade the #16 pick and the #41 pick to Atlanta for the #12 pick (the #12 pick was originally San Jose’s, but was traded to Atlanta with the #49 and the #207 in exchange for the #8 overall).
  • 7/30/2005: Rangers use the #12 overall pick to draft Marc Staal.
This one may not be as exciting as the Dubinsky chain, but it’s still cool nonetheless.  Let’s remember that picks and players are assets, and you use those assets to acquire players that you believe will help your team.  That’s the goal of a General Manager.  Picks, prospects, and players are assets, nothing more, nothing less.
