Ryan McDonagh Signs

July 6, 2010, by

The Rangers have officially signed touted prospect Ryan McDonagh out of the University of Wisconsin. McDonagh, a physical defensive defenseman, was acquired as a part of the Scott Gomez trade in June, 2009. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but expect something along the lines of the Derek Stepan deal.

Update: The cap numbers for McDonagh are in, via CapGeek. McDonagh signed a three year, entry level contract with a base salary of $875,000. McDonagh will also receive $425,000 in performance bonuses per year and $87,500 per year in signing bonuses. This total of $512,500 in bonuses puts McDonagh’s cap hit at $1.3 million per season.

This is a big day. If he’s as advertised, then the D just got a lot better. I’m anxious to see him in preseason play

  2. Jurgenno88 says:

agreed Jeremy. this day could be huge. First of all, all the worriers out there who said he’d go to free agency can calm down and as you say, potentially the D just got alot better, younger and………cheaper.

  3. Kenny says:

I guess it looks more and more like Redden will be waived.

  4. Dave says:

If the Rangers re-sign both Staal and Girardi, then the battle for the last spot on the blue line will be between McDonagh and Redden.

  5. Leatherneckinlv says:

Gilroy 7th D and fill in forward would be awesome to see and yeah most will end up minus players however its worth it…experience is invaluable

  6. Dave says:

This is going to be another tough year to watch if you’re expecting them to win. With McDonagh a rookie, and MDZ and maybe Gilroy also on the blue line in their sophomore years, the defense will be shaky. All worth it in the end though.

  7. Mark says:

Agreed Our Defense is finally taking form and looking pretty promising. It would have been nice to see Sangs try to earn his keep but with MCD, MDZ, and hopefully Staal and Girardi we have 4 good young Defenseman… Sather might finally be getting it…

  8. Mark says:

…what about Pavel Valentenko?? He was the iother guy in the Scott Gomez trade. I have heard really good things from Prospect watch and other sites… is there a chance that he comes over this year?

  9. Dave says:

I’ve heard great things about Valentenko. He’s essentially a healthy Michael Sauer, a big body who is a stay at home guy. He has committed to coming to the US this year (http://blueseatblogs.com/2010/06/19/valentenko-to-attend-prospect-camp/), but he will be in Hartford probably to get acquainted with the North American game.

  10. Mark says:

Thanks a lot Dave… Could be nice in a couple of years to have a D of Staal Girardi, MDZ Saur, Mcdonaugh and Valentenko… Gilroy? Pretty solid future right there at the blue line…

  11. Dave says:

Don’t forget about McIlrath and possibly Kundratek. The blue line depth in this organization is unreal.

  12. Mark says:

Great point… the future on the blue line is actually something to get excited about.

  13. Dave says:

Yup, and with that kind of depth, you can trade to address other team needs.
