Callahan signs, Korpikoski traded to Pheonix

Steve Zipay of Newsday tweets that Ryan Callahan has signed a contract, avoiding the arbitration hearing set for later this month. Still don’t know the terms, but Zipay says that “it is believed to be a substantial raise and a multi-year deal.” Good for Callie, he’s earned it. We’ll post the numbers once we find ‘em.

Update (8:36pm): Zipay now tweets that Lauri Korpikoski has been traded to Pheonix. Details to come.

Update (8:39pm): SNY’s Ranger Blog says the Korpedo was traded for Enver Lisin, a restricted free agent. Lisin scored 13 goals in 48 games last year, and Hockey’s Future says he has “significant offensive upside” and is a fantastic skater. I like the move, sounds like a damn fine addition for the third line with the potential for more in the future.

Update (9:12pm): Back to Callie, he gets two years, $4.6 M. If my math is right that’s a $2.3M cap hit. Not bad at all.

Excellent moves today by Slats. Have to give credit where credit is most definitely due.

In general Jordan, i agree – Sather is having a solid off season. If i was being picky i’d have liked more term on Callahans deal as i think that cap figure will double in 2 years time.

The Korpikoski trade? i heard he was asking for 2m+ which for a 14pt rookie season, a demotion and to be fair, solid D is an insane amount.

Lisin is a risk but seems to have tremendous upside. Everyone raves about his talent but not his work ethic. Zherdev 2?!

With the slight cap saving i have to think they’re willing to keep Zherdev now as the likely 600k-1m they save off Korpikoski allows them to bring Z back – even at 4m. will be interesting to see.

Well that’s a lot of activity. I got dumped on at work and passed out when I got home, so I missed this.

This trade makes the 2004 first round a bust though, officially.

I guess this explains the pick up of those 3rd liners, plus it opens a spot for someone else to make the team.

Hey jurgenno, why are you posting at 5:35am? Go to bed man.

    ha-ha… Dave,

im based in the Uk so i post when i get to work hence the strange time to you!
love your blog though. No idiots on this blog.

Im disappointed we gave up on Korpikoski so early but if his wage demands were really 2m(ish) then he had to go. The cap makes teams make business and not just sporting decisions. Pre-cap he’d have definitely been given another year.

What can we expect from Callahan guys? im hoping 25+ goals and another two ton of hits!
